Bible on your Symbian Phone

Previously, I mentioned Java Bible for MIDP mobile phones (Jolon’s Go Bible), then PocketPC Bible for PDAs/*DAs (Pocket e-sword), now something not that old, but Bible for your Smartphones (Anything better than Symbian 60, which is almost any new handphone nowadays)

The software I’m using is the free, open source software named

S60Bible or Symbian Bible

Its a port/derivative from the palm bible+ which uses palm portable document.

Now, this software like other bible software, is just the engine and therefore you need to find and download the “Bible Databases” to work. (If you don’t, you will need to write or use others’ tools to create them)

Here are some links which you should be able to get more than what’s necessary.

Palm Bible Plus Premade Bibles

theChan Website of Ported Christian Bible

McLean Ministries
Other versions of symbian bible including for UIQ and more bible to downloads.

Tips
Also note, you can install commentaries too, and use the select bible function to switch between bibles/commentries. The commentaries I am using- Clark, Wesley, Matthew Henry, Geneva

Change the font to something which you can get use to

Configure the key bindings to fully control the software. I have tune my to somewhat the keys of “Go Bible”. I use left and right to scroll line-by-line, while up and down for page-by-page, 1 and 4 for next/previous verse, others for history, bookmarks, books.

I usually still using the midlet version of the bible, then switch task to s60bible to look up references.

Well, its just not good enough knowing of good software. Its time to start using and read the Bible!

Some interesting facts about the bible.

  • 66 books (39 OT, 27 NT) written over 1600 years by 36-40 different people in 3 different languages (Hebrew, Greek, Aramaic)
  • has been translated to over 1300 languages, more than 500 million copies sold in 2002 alone, and over 6.5 billion copies have been printed since 1450.
  • 7 wonders (its formation – written by different people in different places over a long period of time; its unification – one book; no contradictions; its age – most ancient of all books; its sale – best seller of all time; its interests – read by everybody, young and old, learned and unlearned; its language – a literary masterpiece despite some of its books being written by uneducated men; its preservation – most hated but preserved till today!

Other free, good software I have on my s60 phone (n-gage classic)

AutoLock - To auto-lock phone auto specified time to prevent accidental keypresses and save backlight (battery life! maybe phone bills, irritation and noise too)

OGGPlay - To play ogg files on ur phone!

DictionaryForMIDs / Oxford Dictionary Midlet - using a translation midlet engine, orginally for chinese to english i think, but it makes a powerful dictionary and tool

msvDriveE - Uses memory card to store messages. Means you free up space on ur internal memory, have much for space for storing sms, able to receive big bluetooth attachments (OBEX objects), and send files thru bluetooth bigger than ur internal memory (> 2MB)

Side track again to some interesting software I seen for pocketpc recently.

Midlet Manager - For running java/midp software on windows mobile.
Dicty - Dictionary
Shortcuts - for switching off screen, restart.. etc etc..

Chinese Bible on iPAQ

Recently I help someone who wanted to have a Chinese bible on her HP (previously Compaq) iPAQ.

Here’s how I did it in case you are interested to do it yourself too.

1. In order to transfer files, install applications or sync your Window Mobile 2003 (or Windows PocketPc 2002, or Windows CE) you will need to install Microsoft ActiveSync

2. One of the programs I found is e-Sword, a free, useful, powerful bible tool for multiple platforms. The version for windows-based PDA is called Pocket e-Sword. Go http://www.e-sword.net/pocketpc/downloads.html for downloads.
You will need to download the core software (sort of viewer with no content), then download the bible versions you want (I picked the KJV Red version and Chinese Union Simplified). (there are other Bible languages, commentaries, dictionaries, and devotionals add-ons to download too)

3. Unless your pda comes with chinese software already (02?), you will unless need to install chinese font into your windows. You can get it free at Declan’s Guide to Installing Chinese Fonts on a Pocket PC (Instructions included)
Remember to reset the pda, set your font options in pocket e-sword to the chinese fonts in order to display the chinese characters correctly.

Other alternatives?
Pocket e-Sword does not word wrap the chinese characters, making it slightly difficult to read compared to the english versions.

Olive Tree Bible Software - Bible software for variety of handhelds

NET Bible for Handhelds

There might not be too many other bible software , but there are Bible “ebooks” for different viewers too (pdf, microsoft reader). One way is getting a txt or word format document of the Bible and use the viewers to open them.

Bible on your Handphone

Extracted from my mail to some youths

Kitami recently introduced me to this free bible software (kjv and asv editions) called “Go Bible” for mobile phones. (He did request if I could code an bible application.. at that time i could only find bible software for pda and palm.. and thought too the whole bible was too huge unless spitted into smaller books.. of course nowadays handphones have capabilities reaching pdas)

Nowadays most modern (&coloured) handphones are capable of running “java applications”. Its specially easy since you could install applications through infra-red, bluetooth, cable, or wap connection.

There are 2 versions.. version 1 is for “older” handphones which cant support big files. version 2 is for newer, better end handphones.. version 2 supports chinese versions and sending verses to your friends.

Even for my “free” nokia 3120, I’m able to copy a few books into the phone (eg. Proverbs, Psalms.. using version 1.. as for NT, I have a pocket new testament bible).. You can jump to any verse, or search for words.

Since we bring our mobile phones everywhere with us (and play games when we are bored), i think its a great idea that we have a “bible” everywhere we go.

The link for the software is at http://www.onthenet.com.au/~jolon/

But after what I said, doesnt mean I recommend not bringing bibles to church. ;-)

Reason you die is not because you find not a doctor

During the sermon from last Sunday, I feel bad that I could have said something like the following to some

“If you do not believe in Jesus Christ, you would go to hell.”

The statement is not false, however it is true for an option, not the cause.

Its is similar to a case if lets say a person is dying because of an illness, lets say cancer, and the person does not want to look for doctor. When the person dies, he dies of cancer and not because he seek not a doctor.

If someone is very sick and does not want to see a doctor, and you say “If you do not find a doctor, you will die”, this statement refers to the option he has but not the cause if he dies.

So illness is the cause of his death. Likewise, sin is cause of death and reason why we would go to hell.

For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Romans 6:23

Likewise the cure would be to find the doctor.

When Jesus heard it, he saith unto them, They that are whole have no need of the physician, but they that are sick: I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

Mark 2:17

Hope I havnt confused things here.
